Formation Of Social Committee
Tauranga Chamber Of
Commerce
Comforts For Children
In Hospital
Resuming a discussion carried over from the previous meeting of the Chamber of Commerce, on the questi'oir of whether or not the formation of a junior body of the chamber was warranted in Tauranga, Mr C. Davey said, at a meeting this week, that he thought their organisation should keep within its intended orbit. It had been suggested by Mr M. B. Clark at the February meeting, that, as an alternative to a junior chamber which he had considered unwarranted, a social committ.ee should be formed to conduct all social functions, such as Christmas treat parties for children and the provision of children’s hospital gifts. Mr E. S. Hylton mentioned that Christmas cheer was provided for the children in the hospitals of other large centres by commercial travellers’ associations, which organised visits to the hospitals for the purpose of distributing gifts to the child patients.
“Those travellers represented the people of their communities and we represent the people of Tauranga,” added Mr Hylton. He felt that by taking over that hospital function they would reap a great deal of pleasure from it and that the catering of it would not cost much.
Mr R. S. Wilson drew attention to the fact that a wing for a children’s ward was not part of the Tauranga Hospital yet, and the child patients were scattered throughout the wards. That, he considered, would make difficult the preposition until the children’s ward was built, possibly in a few years’ time. Mr F. N. Christian expressed the opinion that it would be nice if the members met the children, as the Rotary Club did. Mr Clark suggested that it would be a good idea if a small committee of three members were formed to provide comforts for the children at Christmas time, and he moved in that direction.
Mr Davey opposed the suggestion, remarking that the few children who were patients at the hosnital had parents and plenty of relatives from whom thev received novelties. They were not living in n destitute community, he said, and it was not that they were to be uncharitable. It was a Question of keeping within the bounds cf their activities, he added.
Mr Davey proposed an amend-
ment to Mr Clark’s motion, that the ouestion be left for discussion decision at the annual mee • Failing a seconder, the amendmen lansed. .; P d Mr Clark’s motion was can eu, with the additional clause that ‘ report should be brought down . consideration at the next an meeting. Messrs C’ark, Hylton Craig were appointed to the c mittee.
