1000 ALCOHOLICS IN DOMINION

WORK OF NEW SOCIETY PRAISED (P.A.) Auckland, March 15. The work of Alcoholics Anonymous for inebriates was praised by Mr J. H. Luxford, S.M., at the Auckland Rotary Club today. He was proposing a vote of thanks to Mr I. Mac Ewen. who had addressed the club on the organisation rn NewZealand.

Mr Luxford pointed out that the problem of the inebriate was one which medicine and psychiatry had not been able to solve. As a visitor to the Inebriates' Home he was particularly concerned. A group under the Alcoholics Anonymous system was now working at the home.

Mr Mac Ewen sai'd he was a contact for Alcoholics Anonymous, a local organisation based on the United States' system. Although no definite figures were available, it appeared that there were no fewer Uian 1000 alcoholics in New Zealand. In this country the work was still at an awkward development stage,
