To New Zealand

With Eisenhower During

War

Two senior British army staff officers from the Ministry of Defence in London, Major-General K. W. D. Strong, C. 8., 0.8. E., and LieutenantColonel H. R. Greenwood, arrived at Auckland yesterday by air from Australia, on a liaison visit to New Zealand.

They have been on a similar mission in Australia. Major-General Strong, who is director of the Joint Intelligence Bureau, Ministry of Defence, was head of General Eisenhower’s intelligence staff during the war. Colonel Greenwood, who is a Canadian, has served for the last ten years in India, Burma and Malaya. He was officer commanding the Royal Engineers of the 25th .Indian assault division during the landing and occupation of northern Malaya. They left Auckland by the limited express last night, for discussions at _ headcmarters of the defence services in Wellington. They will leave New Zealand to return to London at the end of this week. aged 48, and has a distinguished war record, was appointed DirectorGeneral of the Political Intelligence Department of the Foreign Office m 1945 and served in that capacity until 1947. He holds the American Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, the French Croix de Guerre with Palms, and the Russian Order of the Red Banner. A brilliant linguist, Major-General Strong has Qualified as an interpreter in German, French, Italian and Spanish.
