Hume) was asked to communicate with the engineers of the Hutt Valley Power Board and the Lower Hutt City Council, with a view of combining in the service, which is cheaper if 10 units are provided. It was also stated that the Petone Fire Board would probably be installing at least two units. The capital cost, it was stated, would bo £l7l a unit, plus annual charges of £35. The annual charges, however, would be offset by the present telephone charges of £37 3s lid, which would be abolished if Petone and Lower Hutt each came into the scheme. Egg White Substitute , A substitute for the white of egg has been made from fish by the fats research laboratory of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. It can be used in ice cream, . icing for cakes, whipped cream, butter cream, American cakes, and for industrial purposes in plastics, textiles, leather dressing, and other products. The process is of German origin and the substitute is known as eiweiss, which is German for egg-white. It has been tested vn a Wellington bakery, and has compared favourably with the natural product. The colour was good and the whisking properties were as good or better than the genuine produce. Economically, production on a large scale would easily compete with the expensive imported albumen, especially as it would use fish that would otherwise be wasted,
