Berlin Air Lift Held Up Temporarily
London, March 1
Snowstorms and 80-mile-an-hour gales are still hampering the Berlin air lift. The Berlin airports had to close down early this morning but at midday were able to allow 13 aircraft to land. Since then there have been no more allowed. All over Western Germany ' the gales have caused much damage, and the collapse of buildings have killed a number of people. Throughout the day ships of several countries have been in difficulties off Holland, which is having its worst gales of the winter. The crew of a Polish freighter which sank were rescued by a Dutch tug. Amohg a number of ships which have been driven ashore on the Dutch coast, were the 10,000 ton British ship City of Lucknow, which went aground. She was later refloated. A 5000-ton American ship is still aground.
