PROHIBITION OF TAWA TIMBER

RESOLUTION RESCINDED AT MOUNT MAUNGANUI

A decision to rescind a resolution on the council’s books prohibiting the use of tawa timber in buildings within the borough, was reached at the monthly meeting of the Mount Maunganui Borough Council. Cr A. Wallace had, at the December meeting, given notice of motion that he intended to move in this direction and, in proposing the rescinding of the resolution, he stated that he did so because he held the opinion that it was a useless one. In view of the fact that tawa as a building material had been generally accepted and that builders could use it if desired, he considered it was absurd to prohibit its use at Mount Maunganui. “That does not mean that I advocate its use,” he added. “Personally. I would never use it, but if others are silly enough to build with this timber and the law permits of its use, we are better without such a resolution on our records.”
