Models At British Motor Show

Popular Ten Suffers An Eclipse

All the British cars which have been on view at Earls Court have been released and in production long before the show opening, except those of Morris and Wolseley,

The cheapest British car is the 8 h.p. Ford Anglia at £242, the most expensive the 3G h.p. Daimler straight-eight chassis, which with bodywork by specialist firms costs over £5,000.

All caps are for export; but some, by reason of the large production capacities of the firms, enjoy a very wide market serving the large motor absorbing world countries. These firms arc Austin, Ford, the Rootes Group, Nufficlds, Standard and Vauxhall, the “bix six” of the industry, with outputs making up over 90 per cent, of the production capacity of the whole industry. The pattern of the large-produc-tion British car for export embraces a 4-cylinder engine from 16-18 h.p.. 4-specd gearbox with under wheel change, and 6-seater bodies. Typical examples are the Austin A. 70. Humber Hawk. Standard Vanguard f3-speed gearbox) and the Vauxhall Velox with a 17 h.p. six-cylinder engine and a 5-seater body. Another car in the popular class, but with smaller output, is the Jowett Javelin, with horizontally opposed cylinders. The Citroen Light Fifteen might also be included in the category. Tens And Twelves Hitherto selling in their thousands, the 10/12 h.p. classes are now restricted to the Austin A. 40, the Ford Prefect, Lanchesfer, Morgan, Morris, Wolseley. and Singer. For 1949 some of these models may be discarded. Owing to the unusual circumstances in the home market, the popular ten is suffering an eclipse. If and when the home market revives, they will be reintroduced.
