FIFTY YEARS AGO
The following items of interest are taken from the Bay 'of Plenty Times of 50 years ago:— A Gisborne Maori tohunga preducts a good fruit crop on the East Coast. He must have been reading the Bay of Plenty Times. * * « M It may be a good thing to catch sharks but it is quite the reverse to leave the dead fish on the beach in front of the town. Such things have been done. . « * ± it The Maoris at Matakana Island have started a co-operative store for the sale of all kinds of goods. As a rule, Maori stores are a failure. * * The recent wet weather has caused a fresh in both the Matata and Whakatane rivers, so much so that the s.s. Katikati had difficulty in getting out of Matata and at Whakatane, the river is practically unsafe for persons crossing.
