MORE TANKER TONNAGE
WORLD OIL USAGE INCREASES Tanker tonnage under the Red Ensign now substantially exceeds the pre-war figure of 3,172,000 gross tons (September 3, 1939), as it has reached 3,636,000 gross tons (May 31); these figures apply to vessels of 1,600 tons and over. None the less world oil usage has increased out of proportion and there is little doubt that tonnage is still a worry in that it may.be responsible for a further crisis as other crises are resolved. The current hold-up in oil is caused mainly by refinery capacity, itself dependent on steel, which is, in turn, dependent on.coke supplies and ore. Thus it may be seen that the resolution of one difficulty in oil supply means that a further one intrudes, and that supplies are likely to increase substantially only with general economic recovery.
