STRIKES IN SOUTHERN EUROPE
TROUBLE IN ITALY AND FRANCE .
SHIPPING HOLD-UP AT MARSEILLES
London, July 2
No French ships have been using the port of Marseilles today because of the seamen's strike. The men have gone ' out in sympathy with the crews of four ships who struck several days ago in protest against their living conditions on board. Seamen have stopped work until tomorrow morning.
In Italv, the ' half-day general strike called by the Communist-led Trade Unions, started at noon today. The strike is only partial because workers in essential services were not called out. The settlement of the shop assistants' wages dispute prevented them from going out. New half-day strikes in particular industries have been called for next week.
