PLANS FOR ROAD TO MOUNT MAUNGANUI

COMPLETION OF TAR-SEALING. To Kairua Station By Christmas Proposal For Remaining Portion A tar-sealed road for the full length of the Tauranga - Mount Maunganui highway can be envisaged when the activities of the Works Department on the present unsealed portion are completed. Although it was intended to provide a sealed road from the Mount to the Mount Maunganui railway station last season, it was not possible to complete the programme. Nevertheless, one mile and a-half

of the two miles which were to be sealed, have been completed. Further sealing work will be carried oifc toward the end of the year, and it is hoped by Christmas to have extended'the sealed portion to near the Kairua station where the road takes a sharp turn to the right, and a bridge crosses the railway line. Sealing work must be carried out in a certain period of the year when conditions are suitable. Therefore, it will riot be possible to recommence activities on the Mount Maunganui road until September.

With a scaled road from Mount Maunganui to the Kairua station, only a small portion will remain to receive similar attention. This part is still a road under the jurisdiction ,of the Tauranga County Council, and will have to be declared a highway. Such a move is afoot.
