INDOOR BASKETBALL GAMES

COMPETITIONS IN TAURANGA Men’s And Women’s Series Success Of Cadet Team

(By “Free Throw”)

Playing in the Tauranga Indoor Basketball Association’s women's competition this week, Atomic beat Rainster in a very fast game, Matches were of a high standard.

Atomic and Rainster are now even, and the final for the S. L. Simons’ Cup will be fought out by them at a later date. These two teams have met on three occasions, and this was Atomic’s first win, which was well earned. Rainster team’s handling was not as good as formerly. The players did not appear to settle down, although they made a great bid for supremacy in the last quarter. On the other hand. Atomic played a great game, seldom making a mistake in any phase of the game. Kiwis beat Rascals in a very even game, extra time being played to decide the match. By this time both teams were very tired and several chances were missed before the issue was decided. The next three rounds for the championship cup commence next Tuesday evening. In the men’s series, Cadets have won the Centennial Cup. They have not been beaten. Cadets now possess a very sound combination. They handle well, while their passing and goal shooting are also of note. They give very few wild passes, and as a team they depend on a passing game and not too much on dribbling. Reliable guards also play a Ihrge part in their success. The Memorial Shield competition for men will commence next week. Steadier As A Team

On Tuesday evening, Rovers beat Wanderers in a game, which at times produced good basketball, and at other periods not so high a standard, although the winners were steadier as a team. A. Bougen is a very steady player both on defence and attack, while his goalshooting is good. A. Robinson, another valuable club player, also gets his share of the goals, while L : Hampshire and G. Cooney, two new players, are improving with every game. Riddell is a steady guard, and G. Guinness can still be relied on for a pleasing performance. He can turn defence into attack at very short notice.

In this game, Wanderers lived up to their name —they wandered. In addition, their handling waS bad. W Parhmo iW'Torms wHI on the wing and usually does his share of the defensive work. He handles well until he trios to play too fast. Another useful player is R. Simistcr, at centre, who handles well and is a reliable goal-shooter. However, Si mister should make up his mind quicker what action should be taken. R. Williams combines well with his team-mates. Although a good attacking player, more attention to defensive play would net better results. C. Long is an acceptable club guard. Mcllwright and G. Fisher arc steady players, but both are inclined to wander out of position, and often advance too far.

Teamwork Required

Toilers won with distinction against Old Boys, who at no stage played up to the standard displayed vhe week before. M. Gilbin for Old Boys, scored from snappy movements. Toilers played better as a team, but several of the players still want to act on their own. This team would win more games if those players would only combine, and not take such long shots. Greshams showed up well against Cadets, in a game which was enioved by "11 the players. Greshams’ goal-shooting is improving with every game. Hurricanes beat True Blues. On attack both teams were evenly placed, but True Blues’ defence drifted out of position. Teams with a sound defence all have at least r "ie old nlayer as a guardian. True Blues miss M. Patton, who is not play in" consistently now. However True Blues show promise and will improve with every game.

The draw for next Tuesday evening is as follows:

Court 1 7.15, Old w Hurricanes (L. Silvester and C. Murdoch); 7.55, Easy Aces v. Greshams (R. Grigg and N. Guinness); 8.35, True Blues v. Rovers (R. Sutherland and W. Reid); 9.15, Cadets v. Toilers (C. Mux’doch and A. Bougen). Court 7.15, Cheetshs v. Wanderers (R. Towers and C. Randle); 7.55, Atomic v. Rascals (R. Towers and 'L.. Silvester); 8.35, Kiwis v. Rainsters (R. Towers and M. Morrissey).
