FIFTY YEARS' AGO
During the last-few years the planting of grape vines in this district has progressed slowly but surely, and now quite a number of people have the vine in full bearing. The worst thing growers have to contend with is the depredations of small birds. The crop in seme gardens is simply wonderful. The s.s. Fingal got rather heavily bumped the other day on one of her trips to Whakatane and will probably come up to Tauranga shortly to have the mischief repaired. The river entrances down the coast seern to be in a worse condition just at present than they have ever been before judging from the descriptions by those who have to try and negotiate them.
