USE OF EXPANDER RINGS
CORRECTING TROUBLE CAUSED ' BY WEAR
When should expander rings be used? is a question often asked by motorists.
In general, expander rings can be installed with satisfactory results to compensate for cylinder tapers between 0.006 in (.1524 mm.) and .016 in (.40 mm.). In an emergency, such as getting the vehicle back on the road when pistons are not available, expander rings can be used for cylinders with a taper as great as .020 in (.51 mm.). In these cases the customer should be told that only emergency service can be expected from the new rings. Expander rings will not cure all bad cylinder conditions, nor will they correct trouble caused by wear in other parts of the engine. Where conditions are favourable for the use of expander rings the following advantages can be gained: 1. Saving at leasL one set of pistons. 2. Seventy per cent, to 80 per cent, increase in cylinder block life. 3. Saving the cost of at least one x-ebore job. 4. In an emergency, reduction of out of service time.
