READY-TO-WEAR SUITS
HIGH PRICES RESULT IN ECONOMY BUYING Because of the ' steeply rising prices of clothes, more and more Sydney men are appearing dressed in ready-to-wear suits, which are cheaper than tailor-made. Men, who before the war would not dream of buying a suit “off the hook,” are finding tailored prices beyond them. The higher cost of clothing is partly attributed to the 40-hour week and increased pay granted to mill hands, but the cost of suitings has also sky-rocketed. It is almost impossible to buy a length of highgrade Australian cloth, although mill production' has never been higher. Encouraged by the Federal Government to seek overseas markets, mill owners are shipping the best of their products to other countries at a much higher price than they can Obtain locally under price control regulations. In 1947, Australia exported 4.128,150 scmare vards of piecegoods valued at £1,631,070.
