VETERAN YACHT SOLD

WAITANGI TO SAIL TO AUSTRALIA (P.A.) Auckland, April 5. One of the oldest yachts on the Waitemata, the A class keeler Waitangi, has been sold by her owner, Mr W. A. Wilkinson, to Mr E. B. Chapman, of Russell, who intends to sail the yacht to Australia. The Waitangi, which was built in 1898, was sailed last week to the Bay of Islands by Mr Chapman and Mr H. C. King. After outfitting there, she will set out on the Tasman crossing. Built in Auckland, the Waitangi's first success was in winning the Wellington provincial championship soon after her construction and the New Zealand championship at Lyttelton ten years later. Four of her owners have flown the flas cf commodore of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. Mr Chapman intends to sail the yacht to Townsville, Queensland, and later may make a cruise to the Pacific Islands. The Waitangi is cutter-rigged, but her new owner proposes to convert her to ketch rig. The yacht's overall length is 56ft, beam lift 6in and draught 9ft.
