VICTORY FOR MOUNT MANUNGANUI

CONTEST FOR HUTTON BANNER Athletes At Coronation Park A. Davies Outstanding In Sprint Events (Times Correspondent) Mount Maunganui representatives were successful in winning the first contest for the Hutton Banner, when teams from these two athletic clubs competed at Coronation Park on Saturday. Weather conditions were perfect and the track was in splendid order after the recent rain. The banner was recently presented by Mr E. G. Hutton, president of the Mount Maunganui Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club, for annual competition between the two clubs. Saturday’s meeting was fairly well attended. Some first-class performances were registered, and a closely contested afternoon’s sport saw the Mount Maunganui team emerge victors by 135* points to Tauranga’s 1074.

The outstanding performer on the track was A. Davies, the young Tauranga athlete, who won the sprint events for his club in both the senior and junior sections. Of the cyclists, lan Stewart and Jim Higgins, the two Mount Maunganui exponents were in splendid form; they provided a thrilling finish in the two mile open scratch race, victory going to Stewart by a narrow margin.

The Banner was presented to Colin Carlton, club-captain of the Mount club, ait a dance held in the Peter Pan Hall on Saturday evening, when Mr E. G. Hutton also presented the points trophies'won during the season to club members. Mr Carlton expressed the a+hl«tes’ thanks to the officials who had so willingly given their services, and in particular those from the Taur3PSa club who had assisted.
