The following items of interest are taken from the Bay of Plenty Times of 50 years ago:— The Kauri Timber Company are at present purchasing a large tract of kauri forest near Mercury Bay from the natives, and amongst the owners are some local Maoris. A number of gentlemen met yesterday afternoon at the. Tauranga Hotel and discussed the advisability of re-opening the Masonic Lodge in Tauranga. A suitable building can be obtained for holding the meetings in and it is hoped that all Masons will assist. A further detachment of local natives have gone gum-digging at Katikati. It is reported that one man made £6O in three months. About 2000 shares in the Te Puke Gold Reefs Co. were applied for at the public meeting last night.
