The Communists scored their first major success in their campaign against Labour inside the trades union movement when their nominee. Mr Walter Stevens. wr>s elected general secretary of the Electrical xrades Union, wnich has a membership of 161,000. This union, which is regarded as one of the most influential in Britain, moved a resolution at the Brighton Trades Union Conference in 1946 strongly criticising Mr Bevin's foreign policy. It is regarded as one of the strongest supporters of the Left Wing in the trades union movement.
