ONE THOUSAND NEW SETTLERS

IMMIGRANTS FROM BRITAIN

(P.A.) Wellington, Jan. 14. The Minister of Immigration, Mr McLagan, said today that more than 1000 new settlers from Britain were arriving by the Atlantis and the Rangitata in the first week of February. It was not yet possible to say how many of the people would be allocated to the various districts.

Further details were being awaited from London, but the widest distribution would be made throughout the Dominion. Employment in each district would be arranged by the district offices of the Immigration Department, in consultation with the employment advisory committees for the various industries.

Mr McLagan said that the Atlantis, which the New Zealand Government had chartered especially for immigration purposes, was expected to arrive in Wellington on February 7. Her complement would be made up of 490 single men and women under the Government's free and assisted passage scheme, 73 single men who were being brought out as recruits for the Air Force and Navy, and 52 Government sponsored passengers, both married and single, who had been granted passages to enable them to work in important occupations 'in the Dominion.

The Rangitata, which is at Wellington on February 9, has on board 212 single men and women who are being brought out under the Government's immigration scheme, 15 Air Force and Navy recruits, and 173 Government sponsored passengers.
