TAURANGA WINS FIRST RACE

CORNWELL CUP - CONTEST

Event At Paremata Yesterday

Fine Showing Of Local Representatives

(P.A.) Wellington, Jan. 14. The Tauranga Takapuna class yacht Albatross, skippered by Ray Bailey, with B. Hartley as forward hand, von the first race for the 1948 Cornveil Cup contest held at Paremata his afternoon.

Tauranga led the fleet from the first windward beat, and finished 53s ahead of Auckland, which was second across the line. Christchurch was lis astern of Auckland, in third place. Paremata, which is defending the cup, was fourth. The race was held in the upper harbour at Paremata in a moderate to fresh variable north-westerly

wind at high tide. The second boat home, Auckland, ripped the bottom of her spinnaker on the second run down to the leeward mark. Although it threatened tn burst completely at every gust, the sail held throughout the two runs. The Wellington boat, Secret, found the wind too light and from a fair start dropped back to 12th place, finishing 7m 35s behind Tauranga. Timaru, the last boat across the starting line, lost its forward hand (J. Vuleta) overboard six minutes after the race had started. She dropped well back waiting while he swam after her and tailed the fleet from then on. The second race in the series will be held tomorrow, starting at 10 a.m., with the third race in the afternoon. The first crew to win three races will win the cup. Today's results were:—Tauranga (R.
