ELDERLY MAN SAVED

RESCUED FROM SEA NEAR MOUNT GOLF LINKS PLUCK AND READY RESOURCE

The plucky attempt of a Tauranga resident in rescuing an elderly man from the sea near the Mount Maunganui Golf Club's links late on Tuesday afternoon, was praised by bystanders yesterday. The swimmer drifted beyond the breakers, but on realising his predicament he had the presence of mind to float until help arrived. There were quite a few people on the beach at the time, but few could swim. Mr S. Beardmore, of Tauranga, who is not' a strong swimmer, instructed bystanders to work a reel, which had been left there by the Mount Maunganui Surf and Life Saving Club, and h'e went to the distressed man's rescue with the belt.

Remembering instruction which had been given by the club at a demonstration, Mr Beardmore returned to the shore with the elderly man who, though exhausted, was able to return to his home.
