DETERMINATION TO FAST
GANDHI’S DECISION A SHOCK TO INDIA
CONSIDERABLE ANXIETY FELT FOR HIS HEALTH
London, Jan. 13
In New Delhi today, Mr Gandhi held his first Indian prayer meeting since the beginning of his new fast for unity throughout India and Pakistan. There were about 500 people present, including many Indian soldiers and airmen. Mr
Gandhi seemed in the best of spirits.
A despatch from New Delhi says that Mr Gandhi’s decision to fast again came as a bombshell to the whole of India, Members of his personal staff knew nothing of it until Mr Gandhi made the announcement yesterday at his prayer meeting. The despatch says that considerable anxiety is felt for his health. Mr Gandhi is 78 and comparatively fit, but he cannot be expected to stand the strain of a long fast. Correspondents say that there is no doubt that he will continue in his resolve no matter what pleas his friends may make.
