PLAY RESUMES IN TAURANGA

OUTRIGHT WIN TO MIDLAND

Coliege’s Surprise Victory

Over Tauranga

Bright Batting Display By Des. Cooney

Bright batting by D. Cooney (College), who contributed a forceful 90 runs, was a feature of the Tauranga Cricket Sub-Assoeiation’s Baker Cup games on the Domain on Saturday. A considerably strengthened College eleven gained a surprise first-innings win over Tauranga, and Midland secured an outright victory over Country. Country’s Poor Batting An outright win by an innings and 31 runs was gained by Midland when they met Country. Batting first Midland were not impressive. J. Clarke (55) was the only batsman to make anything like a stand and when the last wicket fell a total of 121 runs had been scored. For Country, K. Sharplin handled the ball well to secure five wickets for 43 runs. M. Grayling took three for 42. Country, when their turn came to bat, failed miserably and the first innings realised only 37 runs. Clarke and D. Jones, who secured five wickets for 17 runs and three for three respectively, did most of the damage. Country fared little better when they were forced to follow on, and when the last wicket fell only 53 runs were up. K, Sharplin (10 not cut) was the only batsman to register double figures. Bowling for Midland, Jones again performed well with the ball to capture six Country wickets for 21 runs. W. Ellis secured two for one. Scores: —

College Secure Win A first-innings victory by 46 runs went the way of College when they met Tauranga. Having first use of the batting crease, Tauranga ran up a total of 107 runs before the innings closed. T. Pickett played a good captain’s knock and was run out after compiling 50 runs. G. Sutherland <29) was the only other batsman to reach double figures. Bowling for College, P. Keenan secured three wickets for 33 runs and Aitken took two for 15.

Mainly due to a valuable innings by Des. Cooney, whose 90 runs included five sixes and eight boundary shots, College had no difficulty in passing their opponent’s total. Bowling for Tauranga, T. Sorich took four wickets for 19 runs and Pickett secured two for three. Scores:—
