WORK FOR MAORI
PEOPLE Selection Of Mr P. Reweti Confirmed Scheme For Tauranga District A progressive step in the advancement of Maori welfare work in the district follows the appointment of Mr Pehiriri Reweti, of Hairini, a prominent member of the Maori race, as Maori Welfare Officer in Tauranga. Mr Reweti, who has been closely associated with educational work in the district, is a member of the Tauranga College Committee of Management, and has taken a keen interest in public affairs of the town and in sport. Confirmation of his appointment, which was made under the Maori bociai ana Economic Advancement Act. 19-if). has been received from the Public Service Commissioner. The area lo be covered by Mr Reweti extends from Athenree in the west to Papamoa Station in the east, in the Tauranga county, and to Putaruru in the south. Included among his duties will be the i ■
organisation of tribal committees in the area, while welfare work falls under the general headings of social security, health, housing, employment, accommodation, Police eases, tribal meetings, interviews and advice, in addition to other welfare work. An important part of his work will be that of education. Three tribal executives have been formed in the Tauranga zone to date, and there is a further one to be set up. Those which are now established are situated at Katikati, Matakana, with the third, known as Ranginui, comprising the areas of Te Puna, Wairoa, Bethlehem, Judea, Hairini and the western portion of the Matapihi peninsula. The fourth executive to be set up will cover the eastern portion of the area namely, Maungatapu, Waitao, Mount Maunganui and the balance of Matapihi. Motiti Island will also be associated with a tribal executive. Mr Reweti will act as liaison officer between the. tribal executives and the Native Department.
