ADDITIONAL POWER FROM KARAPIRO
OPERATION OF SECOND TURBINE WORK ON THIRD UNIT UNDER WAY (P.A.) Auckland, today. With only a few final tests to complete, the second 30,000 k.v.a. turbine at Karapiro has been installed in the power house below the dam and its output is now available to suppliers. The unit is the second of. three 30,000 k.v.a. machines to be operated at the dam. The first was brought into the North Island reticulation system last April, shortly after the completion of the dam. The Electricity Controller, Mr F. T. M. Kissel, said the second turbine responded to its tests more readily than the first machine. It would be taken from the system from time to time for tests, but indications were that the machine would be ready for full production within a short time.
Asked about the third turbine, Mr Kissel said that much of the equipment had arrived and installation work had begun. With the use of improvised parts it might be possible to have the turbine running by next February. This equipment would not be accepted as “true,” but would serve as a temporary measure. The difficulties of securing deliveries of this equipment were very trying, added Mr Kissel.
