NEW SEASON OPENED

Fourteen Rinks

Compete

Many Visiting Players

The fortjr-second official opening of the Tauranga Bowling Club took place on Saturday. The weather was ideal for bowling and there were 14 rinks competing in the two greens, making 110 players, including visiting bowlers from the Tauranga South, Mount Maunganui, Putaruru, Te Puke and Rotorua clubs, in addition to several visiting bowlers from as far south as Invercargill. The greens were in good order, and a most pleasant afternoon of bowling was enjoyed by all present.

In the absence of the president (Mr G. G. Pitkethley) the vice-presi-dent, Mr T. S. Doherty, after announcing apologies for the absence of Mr and Mrs Pitkethley, Mr and Mrs Deacon, Mrs Baxter, Mrs Hart Smith, Mr P. C. Landels -and Mr C. R. Washer, extended a hearty welcome to all visiting bowlers, who he was quite sure would find the greens in good order and the gen-' eral conditions most congenial for the opening ceremony.

Mr Doherty called on the Mayor (Mr L, R. Wilkinson) who with Mrs Wilkinson, was the guest of the club, to address the gathering. The Mayor emphasised the sporting spirit that was shown in Tauranga, and said the bowling activities in the district were a byword among the visitors from all parts of New Zealand, and had helped; to a great extent to popularise Tauranga in the eyes of the bowling world. Mr Wilkinson thanked Mr Doherty for the opportunity of expressing his thanks and welcome to those present. Mr F. Burton, the oldest member of the club, was called on to throw the first jack and deliver the first bowl for the 1947-48 season. Mr Doherty declared the season opened.

Owing to the absence of Mrs Pitkethley, Mrs A. 11. Judd acted as hostess, and, with a willing band of women, attended to the afternoon tea which was served in two relays, owing to the large number present.
