PEA-SELECTING MACHINE
DEGREE OF RIPENESS DETERMINED A machine called the “tfehderometer,” built in New Zealand during the war for the Vegetable dehydration plant at Pukekohe, was the arbiter aS to whether any given consignment Of green peas should be quick-frozen br canned. The machine was USed to assess the degree of ripehqss of peas ahd to decide whether or not they were ready for harvesting. Two sets of curved blades were, made to swing through a layer of peas, and mb'sh.
The resistance encountered was measured and recorded by the machine. As pe&s ripen they be'come hardier,.so that a greater force is required to move through them. A careful check showed that the machine could;be relied ort to give consistent results and to distinguish with certainty between various grades of peas.
