COMPLAINTS ABOUT CONDITIONS
UNREST IN AUSTRALIAN .NAVY' ,
MOORING LINE OP DESTROYER CUT
Sydney. May 1(5. Ratings in the Australian destroyer Quadrant are alleged to have cut the mooring line of the ship in the early morning. This follows reports of complaints about conditions aboard the Shropshire and other ships. A rating from the Quadrant told the Sydney Morning Herald that the line was cut as a protest against the food, living conditions and pay. Before the vessel started to drift from the wharf, the quartermaster on duty seized the end of the line and held it round the bollard until relieved. Naval officers will neither confirm nor deny the report. In the House of Representatives at Canberra, the Minister of the Navy, Mr Riordan, said that although slogans reading "Strike for Better Conditions" had been chalked on board the cruiser Shropshire; the men had taken no great interest in them. The commanding officer told him he was perfectly satisfied with the behaviour of the men.
