THOSE CAROLLERS

Sir, in complaining to the world at large at having my front door bell twisted to a mangled wreck by the carollers and bewailing then forgetfulness of “peace on earth’’ slogan, it was not my intention to raise a hornet’s nest. I endeavoured only to give a very gentle hint that their attentions at my place ( sort of Englishman’s home is his castle touch”) were not exactly what I had waited all the year for Santa Claus to bring me..

I was not, as Captain Christian says, ‘‘antagonistic to spiritualistic endeavour” (or in my words, “the other fellow’s hobby”), but I was unhappy at the time of their call and their enthusiasm to relieve me of ray lucre, filthy or otherwise. I do not like the Captain s suggestion of placing a donation handy for the carollers if one does not wish to be disturbed. It smacks far too much of “pay up smartly, laggard. or I’ll disturb your slumbers.” That tone, I think, is not written into the “four freedoms.” At that time of the morning, sir, all I required was some bromide and about three fingers of the dog that bit me. I did not mind the Municipal band, for they called on me at about 9.15 a.m., by which time the bromide w'as doing a magnificent job. I stand corrected by “Pep. and Gib.” when they state definitely that no drums were used. Fair enough, “Pep. and Gib.”, but I do wish the laddies and lassies would stop then stamping when my head is not 100 per cent, acheless. If the carollers read your correspondence columns they will find one or two residents to whom
