FIFTY YEARS AGO

The following items of interest are taken from the Bay of Plenty Times of 50 years ago:'—

The tender of Mr J. Brain for the new approach to- the Town Wharf has been accepted by the Borough Council and the work will he put in hand as soon as the materials can he got together. Traffic on the wharf will, however, have to be suspended shortly for a couple of months or so. Yesterday, the s.s. Katikatl ran an excursion to the Mount in the afterneon but the number of passengers was small. We understand that the company intends to run trips frequently on Thursday afternoons daring the summer and when the public has recovered from the holiday season doubtless they will be well patronised.

Harvesting operations are now in full swing throughout the district but the yield seems on the whole rather light as might naturally be expected owing to the continuous drought since early spring. The maize crops, however,' are coming forward with fair promise and there is yet hope of an average yield.
