Rainster Y/ins Drill

Competition

Tauranga Pipers Perform

Well

To the Caledonian Ground (Arawa Park to Sassenachs) flocked a large crowd last week to hear the music of the pipes and to see the evolutions of the girls’ marching teams. Four pipe 'bands and five girls’ teams -took part in the display, which, from every point of view, was highly successful.

The Tauranga Highland Pipe Band performed well and though not being placed first, gained two close seconds in both the bands’ street march and the bands’ marching on grounds. The Tauranga band was also second in the drumming competition, first place honours in these three competitions being carried off by .the Hamilton band.

The Rainster marching team of Tauranga, annexed ‘the girls’ street marching competition, gaining 74 points. The gathering was organised by the South Auckland Pipe Band Centre, and evidence that the 'New Year spirit had survived the 38 hours from mid-night, Tuesday, .was given in the fact that the sma’ admission charges (saxpence extra on the stand) totalled £ 95. All events were got off on time and there was something to interest patrons all the while.

The hands and lassies assembled at the Ritz Hall and marched at short intervals to tho ground, where the bands first staged marching and countermarching evolutions on tho stand lawn. The .girls’ marching display followed; then came the bands’ marching and drumming competitions.
