FIFTY YEARS AGO The following items of interest are taken from the Bay of PlentyTimes of 50 years ago: Japan, according to an Australian M.P., who has returned . from the Orient, wants Northern (Australia for colonisation purposes and will seize territory there if Australia which is at present a useful ally, becomes estranged. On Monday last a body of natives numbering about 60, belonging to the Tuhurangi tribe-, arrived in Tauranga. from the Rotorua district, on their way to Waihi, where a very large gathering of natives is to be held during Christmas week. A number of Tauranga natives also intend being present at the festivities. Three native bands are to be in attendance and sports of all kinds are to take place.' \ The holiday season proved too much for the natives working at the Karikari mine, and operations have been suspended for a time. The Motiti natives are going in for a new year spree and a number of Maoris from Whakatane who were invited to attend arrived at Maketu yesterday ready to be conveyed to the island.
