NEW RATION BOOKS

HOW TO« APPLY TEA AND SUGAR COUPONS ENLARGED The new ration books will be issued on application at Post Offices and at special issuing offices in the main centres from Monday, October 14, till Friday, October 25. This year it Avill not be necessary to produce Social Security books when applying for new ration books. The times and places of distribution, which will be much the same as last year, will be advertised in the newspapers and by radio announcements. In the new books the tea and sugar coupons have been made much larger for more convenient handling, and this year the two pages of clothing and household linen coupons have been printed in different colours to help prevent their use before they become valid. No alteration has been made in the number of coupons. A new hosiery card containing'coupons Nos. X 303 and X 304 will be issued to all women of 16 years and over. Farmers who kill their own stock for their household use will again be required to surrender their meat coupons and obtain consumer permits when they receive the new ration books. Butter coupons are again numbered from 1 to 52, but every fourth coupon canot be used as long as the present reduced ration is in force. How To Apply Applications for the whole family's ration books may be made by any responsible member of 'the family, provided the application form on sheet 15 of the current ration book is filled in and signed by the present holder. The application form must not be detached from the book, which should be handed in complete to the issuing officer. It the holder is under 10 and not living or working away from home, the form is to be signed by the parent or guardian; if at boarding school the principal of the school, and not the parent, will sign and present the application. People under 21 and of 70 years or more must show their date of birth on the application form. Elderly people whose age entitled them to the extra butter ration last year also receive with their new books a sheet of coupons representing a further three months' extra allowance at the rate of two ouncen of butter a week. Those who have just reached 70 years must show evidence of age before receiving the extra butter allowance. Such people, who have not already received the special card, are also entitled to apply for the two tea coupons which together authorise the purchase of an extra pound of tea at any time between November 1, 1946 and January 31, 1047. Special Ration Rooks In addition to the general ration book RBI issued to everyone ovei 10 years of age, there are other ration books available for ' three special groups. These aie: (1) RB1C: Supplementary ration book for expectant mothers, issued on 'production of the appropriate certificate. Where people at present have, a No. 5 supplementary book, no new supplementary book will bo issued. However, production of the present No. 5 book, which will be retained by the"holder, makes available the separate issue of an egg and buttter sheet for the new rationing year.

(2) RB1B: Available to all children between six months and five years of age, replacing the supplementary ration book when the child reaches six months.

(3) RB1A: Ration book available to all children who have reached five years and are under 10 years of age on December 31, 194&.

Each year many ration books are lost. There is a better chance of their prompt return if the name and address of the owner is filled in immediately on obtaining the new books. Loose cards, such as those for hosiery, extra butter or tea, should be pasted into the ration book.
