SECURITY COUNCIL
MU. LIE’S POWERS INTERVENTION IN DEBATES PERMITTED New York, June 8. The United Nations Security Council has unanimously given Mr Trygve Lie, tiro Secretary-General, extraordinary powers to intervene in any debate and to serve as mediator whenever the council approves. This endorses a ruling given by the committee of experts. The council has also authorised Mr Lie to take part in discussions with the Atomic Energy Coinmis.sion, the Military Staff Committee and any subsidiary body. Tlxe decision arose from a controversy which has been going on behind the scenes since Mr Lie suggested that the council might not have the authority to keep jurisdiction of the Persian question after .Russia and Persia had requested that it lie removed from the agenda. At that time, Mr Edward R. Stettinius, the United States delegate, supported by Mr James F. Byrnes, United States Secretary cT State, questioned Mr Lie's intervention. Mr Lie held linn and his attitude has now been upheld.
