The Bay of Plenty Times FRIDAY, MAY 31, 1946 NEED FOR SECOND PRIMARY SCHOOL

In deciding to write to the Auckland Education Board inquiring i'r any definite steps have been taken to secure a site for a second primary school at the. southern end of the borough, the Tauranga School Committee.is acting in a proper manner. It has been rightly pointed out by the committee that extensive housing schemes are making a big demand on what sections are available in that part of the borough and that unless some action is taken immedatelv there will be no areas available on which to erect a

school. • . .. ft is hardly to be expected that with the tremendous building programme the government has in hand in an. effort to provide ‘domes for the people, Tauranga will obtain a- second primary school in the immediate future, but. there is no doubt that one will have to be provided sooner or later and the sooner the better. In spite of (he fact that a college has been established the conditions al the primary school are far from satisfactory and it is quite obvious that Ihe existing facilites can. never hope to meet the demands that are being made to meet the ever-increasing needs of the district in the education of our children. It would be generally agreed by educationists that the classes at the primary school are much bigger than is considered advisable, • with the result that the efforts of the teachers to give the maximum attention to every child under their case 'is made most dfficnlt. The conditions in many of the classrooms'are far from good. It is apparent that in order to relieve this position and to ensure that the children of this district are given the best possible facilities for education, which all would wish them to have, the time has’ come when very deep thought should be given to .the establishment of another primary school and in pursuing this question as it is doing the School Committee is to be commended.
