OROPI NOTES

FAREWELL DANCE HELD

LYMAN FAMILY HONOURED

(From Our Correspondent)

A dance was held in the Oropi Hall on Saturday, April 27, to % hid farewell to Mr and Mrs Lyman and family who are leaving the district. There was a good attendance. The master of ceremonies was Mr Len Wilson and the music was supplied by Mesdames Monk and Watson with extras by Mrs Shanks.

After supper, which was supplied by the ladies and served by the social committee, Mr Wilson called on Mr J. K. Hamilton to speak. Mr Hamilton said it was not a happy duty he had to perform in bidding goodbye to Mr and Mrs Lyman, who were very well like and respected members of the district. Mr H. (Gasson endorsed the remarks made by Mr Hamilton. The Lyman family, said Mr Gasson, had taken up their farm in Oropi about eight years ago, and had worked very hard indeed, making a gorse-patch into a very fine farm. Mr Lyman, he said, had always been a good neighbour, giving assistance at haymaking time, and was one of the first to join the Home \ Guard when it was formed, later going into military camp. Mrs Lyman had been an indefatigible worker for the patriotic during the war years and would be missed by all who knew her. Mr Gasson concluded by wishing them every happiness in their- new home at Ngongotaha.

Mrs A. Old then presented Mr and Mrs Lyman with a tea set on behalf of the people of the Waimapu and Oropi districts.

Mr Lyman suitably responded. Oropi, he said, raised the champion calf and the champion lamb and he believed it took champion' people to do this job. On behalf of himself and Mrs Lyman he thanked everyone for the gift and for the evening and on behalf of his family he thanked the Oropi teachers.

All sang “For They Are Jolly Good Fellows.”

A Monte Carlo waltz was won by MV and Mrs B. Chaffe and a Mexican statue waltz, which caused great amusement, was won after a keen contest, by Miss.R. Hodge and Mr H. Hodge.

A very pleasant evening was brought to a close by the singing of “Auld Lang Syne” and the National Anthem.
