FOOD-SAVING MEASURES

POSITION SUMMED UP BY MINISTER

Present Cuts May Not Be

The Last

Result Of World Situation

London. April 30

The British Food Minister (Sir Ben Smith) has summed up the latest food-saving measures in England by saying, “These cuts have been brought about by the present world situation and I cannot say they will be the last.” He announced that the one and three-quarter pound loaf would be on sale from next Sunday at the same price as the present two pound loaf. Potatoes and butter are to be cheaper to make up for what amounts to a rise in the price of bread. Sir Ben said he might have to increase the present 85 per cent extraction of wheat for bread but said no barley was going into the loaf at present.
