DEBATE ON HEALTH BILL
FREE SERVICE FOR EVERYONE
Decision To Take Over - Voluntary Hospitals
Minister Defends His Action
London, April 30
The House of Commons to-day began a three-day debate on the bill of the Minister of Health (Mr A. Bevin) which will place Britain in the forefront of medical services.
Mr Bevin was moving the second reading of the National Health Service Bill, aiming ultimately to- give everyone a free service of doctors and specialists as well as attendance at health centres and hospitals. Mr Bevin defended his decision to take over the voluntary hospitals and he also emphasised that doctors under the new scheme of things would not become civil servants.
The Chief Opposition speaker today was Mr Richard Law (Conservative) and one of his main criticisms was over the sweeping away of the voluntary hospitals.
Mr Law also thought the form of discipline that would be imposed on doctors was totally inconsistent with the practice of medicine.
