KATIKATI NEWS

ANZAC DAY SERVICE

UNPLEASANT WEATHER CONDITIONS

(From Our Correspondent)

* Wet weather, driving" in from the north-east, interfered with the Anzac Day service at Katikati. Though the morning gave indications of fair weather, rain later set in and gradually developed into a heavy downpour with only intermittent breaks.

Advantage was taken by the Returned Services' Association, of a lull of a few moments, and the returned servicemen, Red Cross-V.A.D. section, and the Land Army formed into a procession and marched to the Cinema Theatre, where a surprising.--ly good muster of the public awaited them. The proceedings were under the direction of Mr. G. A. Sherson, president of the Returned Services' Association. The address was delivered by the Rev. A. R. Thomas, who took as his theme the "four torches" handed down by those who fell in the last war and this.

The Rev. J. D. Hervey led the prayers, and the scripture reading was taken by the chairman. The pilgrimage to the Memorial Gates had to be abandoned owing to torrential rain, but the R.S.A. Executive later laid wreaths totalling" more than 20. SOCIAL GATHERING A social afternoon was tendered Mrs G. Hatch, a former president of the Katikati Red Cross, by the committee and members on Wednesday, April 26, at the Presbyterian Hall.

Mrs Henry, the president, - after Eulogising Mrs Hatch's work as president since the inception of the Red Cross Society, presented her with a token of appreciation and esteem. Mrs Hatch suitably replied. Mrs J. E. B. Warn gave several pianoforte solos and these were much enjoyed. Afternoon tea was served.
