Issue of licences In his monthly report to the Tauranga County Council, the County Inspector (Mr C. S. O'Neill) stated that in March, 17 motor driving licences and 52 heavy traffic licences were issued. Building permits issued totalled 11 and 13 by-law licences were also issued. Summer Time Extended The Government has decided to extend daylight saving throughout the winter this year. The daylight saving period would normally end on Sunday, April 30, but new regulations will extend the half-hour period of daylight saving to cover the intervening winter months between April and September.

Open Shooting' Season

According to the latest Gazette

there will be an open season for imported game and native game in the Tauranga Acclimatisation district this year. The season for cock pheasants, Californian quail and Australian quail will start on May 6* and close on June 16, while for grey duck, spoonbill duck, black swan and pukeko the season will close two weeks after the opening —May 21. County Rates The collection of rates in the county for the year showed the following percentages, according to the County Treasurer (Mr H. Lewis) in his monthly report to the Tauranga County Council: Katikati Riding 95.5 per cent; Te Puna riding 94.6; "Waimapu riding 94.2; Te Puke riding 95.8; Maketu riding 95.9; for the whole county 95.3 per cent.

Local Body Set Up

Reporting to the Tauranga County Council at its monthly meeting, the County Engineer (Mr T. Moorhouse) stated that he noticed that a Parliamentary Select Committee had been set up to inquire into the whole set up of local bodies . This, he suggested, could be a move in the right direction and in his opinion it was important to see that all worth while ideas reached that committee. It Avas decided to approach the member of Parliament for the district, asking him to keep the council advised of any move which might affect the Tauranga county.

New School Committee At a meeting of the newly-elected 'Tauranga District High School Committee last evening, the Hon. W. E. Barnard was appointed chairman and Mr E. G. Ware secretary. Unsettled Weather The weather still ;remains unsettled. Conditions yesterday were threatening and scattered showers were experienced, 14 inches of rain being recorded on one gauge in the ! borough in 24 hours ended at S o'clock this morning. Golf Competitions Last Saturday's competition on the Tauranga Golf Club's links was a medal handicap. In the seniors, J. Mark was successful, returning a nett 68, while W. Mills with 70 was runner-up. Playing in the junior competition, P. Woods 70, won on the count-back from. P. W. McCulloch, who also returned a nett 70. Anzac Day Travel There will be k« passenger train service on the Tauranga line on Anzac Day, Tuesday, April 25. However, the Auckland-Wellington service will be unaffected. Bus travel to and from Auckland and Waihi will be also cancelled on the Tuesday. The Taneatua-Auckland express, which is affected by the nontravel on Tuesday, will run on Monday, April 24. All travel will return to normal on Wednesday.

Board Member's Difficulty

In a letter to the Tauranga County Council at its monthly meeting, Mr H. J. Cooper, of Katikati, asked that his resignation from the Tauranga Hospital Board be accepted. Mr Cooper stated that his reason for taking this action was that his application for tyres, backed by the board, had been declined, and he would, therefore, be unable to continue to serve on the board. Cr. J. H. Evans paid a tribute to Mr Cooper's services on the board, and moved that he be asked to reconsider his decision and that the council back up his efforts to obtain tyres. The "motion was seconded by the chairman (Mr C. Hume), and carried.
