Her war record started at Pearl Harbour on the day of the treacherous Japanese attack, and includes participation in the Battle of Midway; the United States bombing expedition against Japan, in which she escorted the carrier Hornet, from which the Army Air Force planes took off to bomb Tokio; the first battle of the Solomon Islands, and the Battle of Santa Cruz.
