ARTILLERY GIVEN PRIORITY

AMERICAN PRODUCTION

London, April 12

The War Production Board has authorised an over-riding priority placing heavy artillery on a par with invasion landing craft ass the most urgent items in the whole production programme.

Many observers believe that this action reflects a High Command revaluation of the effectiveness of artillery as a result of battle experience in Italy, where airpower failed to live up to predictions, and where American forces are now using 240millimetre howitzers. Major George Artman, who recently returned from the Anzio beachhead, described the Allied position as a German artillery impact area. He said there was not a safe square foot of ground in the whole beachhead. The Allies were forced to dig in the way they did in the first world war with deep holes and overhead cover.
