The Weather A fairly heavy shower of rain fell during last night and a total of .16 inches was recorded in the northern end of the borough. Plat Fishing Popular Numerous flounder fishing parties have been out on various reaches of the harbour during recent nights. Weather conditions have been favourable and some good catches have been speared. Oropi Gymkhana. Arranged by the Oropi and Waimapu settlers a gymkhana is to be held in Hamilton’s paddock at Oropi on December 27. A good programme has been drawn up and ice cream and soft drinks will be on sale. Hot water will be provided.
Gifts For Forces. A considerable quantity of goods for issue to the New Zealand forces through the National Patriotic Fund Board has been received from America recently, the gift of the Anzac Division of the British War Relief Society in the United States. They represent supplies ordered by Mr Harold Rabling, chairman of the organisation, when on a visit to the Dominion at the end of August. Included are 200 dozen heavy duty cups and saucers, 276 baseball bats, 564 soft baseballs, 444 boxes of picture puzzles, 240 dozen sets of Chinese checkers, 20 dozen sets of dominoes, 840 checker boards, and chess sets. *
Restrictions Relaxed. The Minister of Supply, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, has announced that over the Christmas and New Year period, from Monday, December 20, until Saturday night, January 8, the restrictions on the use of electricity for shop windows and exterior outline or ornamental lighting, including • coloured ■ strong lighting in streets , are to be relaxed. This did not mean that the power shortage problems had been overcome, said Mr Sullivan, but he had been advised by the Minister of Works, the Hon. R. Semple, that conditions at the hydro-electric stations were good at the moment.
