The following is a summary of tire latest war news: XEW BRITAIN CAMPAIGN Tliero have been no recent despatches from the front in New Britain, the latest news of the campaign being that the American force which landed there is consolidating its gains on Arawe Peninsula and pushing inland in the direction of a 'Japanese jungle base. RAID ON BERLIN According to Stockholm messages great damage' was caused by the latest R.A.F. raid on Berlin during which 1500 tons of bombs were dropped. It is stated that the raid took place a. few hours after Goebbels had made a tour of the city inspecting damage done in previous attacks., FIGHTING IN ITALY The Allied armies in Italy arc fighting fiercely in two battle areas 70 miles apart. On the Fifth Army front activity has increased as Allied forces penetrate into the German positions covering the Mignano gap. The Germans are reported to be fighting back bitterly. New Zealand troops have strengthened their grip on the wa round Orsogna on the Eighth Army front lii spite of two fierce German counter-attacks in which the enemy lost heavily. MR. CHURCHILL’S ILLNESS There has been no further bulletin concerning the condition of Mr Churchill, the last one issued indicating that the improvement “od been maintained. It is announced that Mrs Churchill has eft England to be with her hustond during Ids illness and period °> convalescence. THE RUSSIAN FRONT Reports from Moscow and Berln s Peak of hard fighting all along the Russian front from LennSnafl in the north to the mouth the Dnieper. It is reported pat the Red Army is attacking Oe German salient round Lenin- • an d a German communique ■’■Ports heavy defensive fighting dh-west and south-west of ' the hinge between the Oftheni and White Russian front.
