The Bay of Plenty times TUESDA Y, SEPT EMBER 14, 1943. GERMANY IN DIRE PERIL

When Benito Mussolini and his Fascist gangsters tumbled off their perches, the capitulation of Italy was a *™ e *™™ n £™°£ The Italian people were not in the war. it was forced upcn them b> the Dictator, but the sovereign will of the people has tniimphed. Mussolini is down and out and the Badogho Government 1 las I ad to vield to the insistent and persistent demands of the P eo P Jthat, so far as Italy was concerned, the war should be ended at aicosts. Italy is now out of the war, and that brings the war^ neaici its end in Victory for the Allies. The possibilities of the nev, situation are immense. It can now be said that the entire Mediterranean is out of the war zone. It is true that the Dodecanese hay e yet to be occupied by the Allies, but that is a minor matter. IWU} has been granted a military armistice for the present and that means a good deal to the Allies. The Eighth Army has secured a foothold in southern Italy, from whence the Balkans could De attacked and that is what may now be expected. , But Italy is swarming with Germans who must first be driven out of the country. This should not be a very difficult, matter 101 the Germans there are isolated, and unable to obtain supplies ana reinforcements through the Brenner Pass. Moreover, further landings of Allied troops on the Continent are pending. The bombings of Northern France indicate this. Then we have the French troops in North Africa, about 300,000 strong and now fully equipped who must be given the opportunity of helping to deliver France from the German yoke. With a foothold in Italy, and with air bases, the Allies would be able to attack the Balkans. Bulgaria will certainly come in for a pounding, and as the Bulgarians are restless and desire to get out of the war. there may be serious happenings there. The Allies must also attack Crete, and go to the relief of Greece. In this sphere the Allies can safely reckon upon the help of Turkey. Thus it can be seen that Germany is in dire peril on practically all sides. Besides the invasion of France and th« Balkans an attack on Norway would follow as a consequence, and here it is not unlikely that Sweden will take a part in driving the Germans out of Norway. The Russians are positively kicking the Germans from pillar to post. Almost each day the Russians announce new victories. Thev have cleared the industrial district of all Germans, and they will soon have Smolensk in the bag. Hitler set out to secure the rich grain growing lands of the Ukraine for Germany, and the Balkan oilfields were to be captured. From here he was to drive on to Persia, and finally to India, where the Germans and Japanese were to meet and embrace one another. The ambitions of these two gangster nations have undergone a great change. They are now fighting for their lives. They are like rats in a trap, with no hope of escape. We do not hear much of what is happening on the German home front, but Ave will not be wrong if we assumethat chaos reigns throughout Germany. Hitler and his gang must be trembling in their shoes. There is no escape for them.
