W. Lane. The function was held at the residence of Mr and Mrs E. S. Hooper, Aongatete, and in the moonlight the garden and lawn made a perfect setting for a very enjoyable evening which was spent with dancing, games aud competitions.

During the evening Mr G. A. Sherson. postmaster, spoke on behalf of the Post Office staff and also for the R.S.A. and wished the guest of the evening a safe return. Mrs Henry presented him, on behalf of the Red Cross, with a soldier’s parcel. The recipient suitably responded. Supper was served by Red Cross ladies. A very pleasant evening concluded with “Auld Lang Syne” and cheers for the guest, host and hostess.

SCHOOL GALA OUTSTANDING SUCCESS The annual gala day in connection with the Katikati School was held last Wednesday and was an outstanding success. The weather was favourable and there was a large crowd of parents and friends present. Races and competitions of all kinds were keenly contested and there were many close finishes. Stalls loaded with good things did a great business. The picture show attracted large numbers and a mock court proved to be very profitable. In addition to the races a tug-of-war competition caused great interest, the senior being won by Mulgan House and the junior by Gledstanes. Keen was shown by the members of the rival houses and the final points were Macmillan 283, Gledstanes 231, Mulgan 201, Stewart 152. The takings were over £IOO which will be used for school equipment and credit is due to Mr Bayliss and his staff and the children for the manner in which the gathering was organised and run. ANZAC DAY MEMORIAL SERVICE ■: The Anzac service was held in the picture hall on Sunday afternoon with an attendance that filled the building to overflowing. A parade was held from the Uretara bridge and consisted of returned soldiers, Red Cross, V.A.D., W.W.S.A. and Home Guard. They marched to tKO hall to the skirl of the bagpipes played by Mr McLaren. Mr G. W. Rapley, president of the R.S.A. presided. Prayers were given by Canon Kayll, Scripture reading by Mr G. A. Sherson aud an impressive address by the Rev. W. T. Brabyn. The hymns were “O God Our Help,” “God Defend New Zealand,” “Lest We Forget,” and “For All the Saints.”

After the service many beautiful wreaths were placed at the Memorial gates of the domain. \ EASTER MONDAY DANCE
