MERCHANT NAVY LOSS

UNITED STATES CASUALTIES Washington, Feb. 3. The Office of War Information disclosed that American merchant seamen have suffered a. casualty toll of 3.8 per cent dead and missing in 1942, compared with under 1 per cent.in the armed forces. The report added that a greater percentage of survivals was expected in 19 43, in spite of the anticipated increase in submarine activity, as a result of more escort vessels, better armed ships and improved safety devices.
