BOROUGH AFFAIRS

MONTHLY MEETING OF COUNCIL Reports and Decisions Lighting on Coronation Pier The monthly meeting of the Tauranga Borough Council was held on Wednesday evening, when there were present the Mayor (Mr L. R. Wilkinson), Crs. C. T. McFarlane, D. Matheson, E. S. Hylton, C. F. Washer, A. Brewer. A. J. Gallagher and W. S. Holland. The Tauranga Harbour Board wrote asking for the restoration of one of the lights, suitably hooded, near the passenger steps on Coronation Pier. The request was made, the letter stated, principally on behalf of residents of Mount Maunganui and Air Force personnel. The letter was referred to the engineer with power to act. The Workers' Educational Association wrote conveying appreciation of the council in making a grant of £1 Is to its funds. Application Refused The Minister of Public Works (the Hon. H. T. Armstrong) advised that b. 9 was unable to recommend approval of the council's application for the laying of new streets off Morris and Fraser' Streets.

On the motion of Cr. Gallagher, seconded by Cr. McFarlane, it was decided to ask the department for its reasons for opposing the application. The Auckland Suburban Local Bodies' Association wrote asking the council for its support for representations aimed at bringing about legislation to have amounts spent on emergency hospitals refunded.

The letter was referred to the Finance Committee for a recommendation.

Fifteen complaints were received regarding water charges and these were referred to the Finance Committee and the Water Committee. It was also decided that the engineer should confer with the dairy factory officials with the object of asking them to reduce the supply of water at the factory to the lowest minimum.

Basketball Courts

In a letter to the council the Tauranga Basketball Association raised the question of acquiring a more suitable area for basketball courts, and this was referred to the Town Planning Committee and the Parks and Gardens Committee.

A recommendation by the Finance Committee that the Chamber of Commerce be granted permission to hire the council chamber at 12s 6d per meeting not mora than once a month was approved. It was decided to vote a grant of £1 Is to the Auckland Sailors' Home, on the recommendation of the Finance Committee. Inspector's Report The acting-Borough Inspector (Mr R. Bamberry) stated in his monthly report that during the past month no cases of infectious diseases had been reported. Five nuisances were dealt with.

Only one building permit had been issued since last meeting. That was for a wash-house in Harrington Street, the cost being £57. During the month 10 applications were submitted to the Building Controller. This involved a fair amount of time in inspections and interviews with applicants and builders in securing information for the controller and sending it on to him. In six cases the applications were granted. He bad a visit from the controller, who stressed the point that just now until the beginning of next year he could not consider any application for any major building work and any permits he might give now would only be for minor works and clearly on the understanding that the Defence Department programme was not interfered with. Two plumbing permits were grained and seven inspections were made.
