Unable to purchase silk stockings and sun-tan lotions, Sydney girls are rushing to have their legs suntanned by ultra-violet ray lamps, says a Sydney message. Chorus girls, showgirls and actresses are in the majority. On their appearance depends their livelihood. No stage manager would tolerate one pair of lily-white legs breaking the symmetry of the front line of his otherwise sun-tanned ballet. While some theatres have a limited supply of silk stockings for certain performers these stocks are not expected to last long. Silk tights for showgirls already are unprocurable. “Business girls and others who previously thought that their skins were too delicate to suntan are

cheerfully basking under the ultra violet ray lamp two and three times a week, now that they are faced .with a practically stockingless summer,” said Miss Kennedy, of Langridge’s School of Physical Culture.

Turkish baths at this firm are also being rushed both in the men’s and women’s section.

Americans are largely responsible for the increase in clients, although a few women are said to have decided on Turkish baths to keep down their weight, in preference to buying new O.S. clothing out of their limited coupons.

Because of the water restrictions, many of the special showers—such as point, heavy pressure, and pine needle —-that the Americans are accustomed to, cannot be had in Sydney.

Special massage and friction rubs have to make up for these. Amerimans take various types of foam and health baths.
